This weekend, Justin and Hailey Bieber were busy having picnics, swimming, and golfing. For the latter event, they uploaded a snap that appears to be taken on a deserted golf course.
They’re embracing at a tee-off in the photo, and their choice of golfing attire is compelling. Justin wears a graphic tee, shorts, sneakers, and a single white glove as a treat. Hailey wears a cropped tank and sweatpants. Why is this so fascinating? Because Hailey’s sweatpants seem to be on backwards. Or are they?
With its turned-out pockets and what appears to be a tag showing on the back, Hailey’s gray sweatpants appear to be a case of an inside-out wardrobe malfunction, as fashion writer Emilia Petrarca noted on Twitter.
Yet, knowing Hailey is a trendsetter, I wasn’t entirely convinced this was accidental. On a hunch, I turned to Google to see if inside-out pants are a thing—and turns out, they are. Streetwear brands such as Vetements, A Cold Wall, and more have designed pants that are deliberately reversed, so that the seams and inner pockets are displayed on the outside.
Now, why would one want to look like they got dressed in the dark, you may ask? Because irony and satire in fashion is hot right now. Inside-out clothes, in particular, were actually a big runway trend a few seasons ago, too. The look certainly makes passersby do a double take, and isn’t that what interesting design is meant to do?
But back to Hailey.
I cannot confirm or deny that her sweats are actually a genius streetwear creation, or if it’s actually just a classic case of getting dressed too quickly. (Because, been there, done that.) But, knowing her penchant for setting trends, I wouldn’t put it past her if she bought sweats that way.
